Amy Evans is a devout foodie who grew up in a town just outside of Ft. Lauderdale in South Florida. Her Floridian roots have definitely shaped the way she looks at food, however she has been all around the globe exploring new foods in different cultures. Her interest in food even inspired her to start her own food blog, the "floridian foodie" which features meals and restaurants and critiques and praise to go along with it. Amy shared with me what it means to her to be a foodie. "Being a foodie means embracing flavors, becoming excited about the prospect of trying new foods, seeking out undiscovered restaurants, dreaming of the next meal, and finding joy in creating interesting flavor combinations and gastronomical sensations. " It is this type of approach that makes trying new foods so essential. With the adventure in trying new foods in restaurants, society as a whole has the power to create new trends. I asked Amy why she is a foodie and she responded, "I am a foodie because I grew up in a house that revolved around what was for dinner. I accompanied my mom in the kitchen as a young child and was embarrassingly nicknamed “Meals on Wheels” because I demanded full meals when I came home from school instead of having the standard Juicy Juice and Goldfish." While Amy had an innate sense for food at a young age, not all foodies start at birth. For most, one meal can completely transform the way they look at food, and peak their interest in becoming a foodie. Amy and I happen to share the same favorite meal, at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach, Florida. From delicious stone crabs, to house made key lime pie and fried chicken, Joe's has a plethora of delicious foods to offer. Even having grown up in the crab culture of Maryland, I was never introduced to stone crabs because they were more of a southern way of eating crabs. However, my first experience at Joe's Stone Crab was unforgettable and remains to this day as my favorite meal.
Amy developed her food blog "floridian foodie" in 2011 and has captured innovative and delicious meals from across the globe ever since. Her food blog features meals from all areas of cooking: breads, meats, greens and desserts, exhibiting culinary creation in all aspects. Amy's blog demonstrates the wide spectrum of creativity and innovation that can be demonstrated in all areas of cooking. I was able to ask Amy what she thought was the top trend in food right now and she gave a response. "The “farm to table” concept has become popular with restaurants serving locally grown, organically farmed food. Additionally, food trucks are bringing a new meaning to street meat, as they are serving some of the most delicious culinary creations. I’ve also noticed that some of the most basic sandwiches, such as PB&J and grilled cheese, are being revolutionized and made to be gourmet. The merging of savory and sweet and the addition of bacon (bacon is now in everything, even desserts) are transforming sandwiches from boring and bland to exciting and flavor-packed."
